How to Wear Colored Contacts for the First Time: A Beginner's Complete Guide

Wearing colored contacts for the first time is exciting ??but if you've never handled contact lenses before, it's completely normal to feel a little uncertain. The good news: inserting, wearing, and removing contacts is a skill that takes most people just a few tries to master.

This guide covers everything a first-time colored contact wearer needs to know ??from getting your first pair safely to building a daily care routine.

Step 1: See an Eye Doctor First (Even If You Don't Need Prescription Lenses)

Before wearing any contact lenses ??colored or otherwise ??you should have an eye exam from an optometrist or ophthalmologist. Even if you have perfect vision and only want plano (non-prescription) lenses for cosmetic purposes, a professional can:

  • Measure your eye's base curve (BC) and diameter to ensure proper fit
  • Check for any conditions that might make contact lens wear unsafe
  • Give you a contact lens prescription that specifies the fit parameters your eyes need

Moxielens lenses have a standard base curve of 8.6mm and diameter of 14.0??4.5mm, which fits the majority of adult eyes. Your eye doctor can confirm if these parameters are right for you.

Step 2: Gather Your Supplies

Before your lenses arrive, have these on hand:

  • Multi-purpose contact lens solution ??for cleaning, rinsing, and storing lenses (e.g., Biotrue, ReNu, Opti-Free)
  • A contact lens case ??to store your lenses overnight
  • Eye drops (optional) ??lubricating drops compatible with contact lenses for extra comfort

Never use tap water, saliva, or any non-sterile liquid with your lenses.

Step 3: Prepare Your Lenses When They Arrive

New colored contacts from Moxielens come packaged in a sterile vial with storage solution. Before first wear:

  1. Wash and dry your hands thoroughly
  2. Open the vial carefully and pour the lens and solution into your palm or a clean lens case
  3. Rinse the lens gently with fresh multi-purpose solution
  4. Inspect the lens ??make sure it's not inside-out (it should form a smooth bowl shape with edges that curve inward, not flare outward)

Step 4: Insert Your Lenses

This is the part most beginners worry about. The trick is to keep your eye wide open and move slowly:

  1. Place the lens on the tip of your index finger (right hand for most people)
  2. Use your other hand to hold your upper eyelid open, and use the middle finger of your inserting hand to pull down your lower eyelid
  3. Look up or straight ahead, and gently place the lens onto the white of your eye (the sclera) or directly onto your iris
  4. Slowly release your eyelids and blink gently ??the lens will center itself on your iris
  5. If the lens feels uncomfortable or looks off-center, blink a few times or gently massage your closed eyelid

It might take a few attempts your first time. This is completely normal. Take breaks if your eye starts to water ??it's a reflex response that will calm down as you practice.

Step 5: Your First Wear ??Build Up Slowly

For your very first wearing session, don't aim to wear your lenses all day. Start with 2-4 hours and see how your eyes feel. Then gradually increase wear time over the following days:

  • Day 1-2: 2-4 hours
  • Day 3-4: 4-6 hours
  • Day 5+: Up to 8 hours (recommended maximum for colored contacts)

Maximum recommended daily wear is 8 hours. Do not sleep in your lenses ??this significantly increases infection risk.

Step 6: Removing Your Lenses

  1. Wash and dry your hands
  2. Look up and pull down your lower eyelid with your middle finger
  3. Use your index finger and thumb to gently pinch the lens off your eye ??pinch from the lower portion of the lens, not the center
  4. Place the lens in your palm, add a few drops of solution, and rub gently to clean
  5. Rinse with fresh solution and store in your lens case filled with fresh solution

Daily Care Routine

After every wear:

  • Rub and rinse each lens with multi-purpose solution for 10-15 seconds per side
  • Fill your lens case with fresh solution (never top up ??always empty and refill)
  • Leave lenses to soak until next use
  • Clean your lens case with solution (not water), then let it air dry face-down

When to Stop Wearing and Seek Help

Remove your lenses immediately if you experience:

  • Persistent redness, pain, or sharp discomfort
  • Blurry vision that doesn't clear with blinking
  • Discharge or unusual tearing
  • Sensitivity to light

These can be signs of irritation, infection, or improper fit. If symptoms persist after removing the lenses, see an eye care professional.
